Chess in Budapest: clubs, halls and tournaments

Budapest chess is organised around its team league: clubs from Újpest to Csepel field teams in the capital’s divisions and meet in school halls, sports grounds, community houses and the federation’s own building on Falk Miksa utca. Around them runs a crowded calendar of FIDE-rated round robins and opens, while chess schools, a Józsefváros chess room and a few bars bring in children and beginners.

Chess960 in Budapest

Hungarian players know it as Fischer-random or Chess960: the back-rank pieces are shuffled into one of 960 starting positions, so opening theory stops mattering from the first move. Budapest’s calendar is dense with classical, rapid and blitz events, though no dated outing of the variant at a board turned up in it.

Until a club, school or bar sets one up, the variant can be played online at ch960.com.

Neither FIDE’s rated tournaments for Hungary nor the national federation’s calendar, as read for this directory, names a dated Chess960 game on a physical board in Budapest in the period these entries cover.

Reading an entry

Entries are assembled from pages anyone can open: the entry and strength lists of the Budapest Chess Federation, the round reports of the Pest County Chess Federation, the Hungarian Chess Federation’s calendar, FIDE tournament reports and the clubs’ and schools’ own sites. Each fact carries the day its page was read.

Lists put the entries with the newest dated evidence first, and the order says nothing about quality. Where no page answers a question, the entry says “not stated by sources”. The status wording, the three source marks and the limits of the directory are explained under how the places are checked.

Has a club changed its hall?

Budapest teams move to another hall between seasons, and a school chess group can stop when its coach leaves. If an entry has fallen behind, or a club, school or tournament is missing, send a short note with a link to the page that shows it.
